Full Moon Ceremony Talk 4: Four Bodhisattva Vows part 2

This talk continues our investigation of the meaning of the various sections of the Bodhisattva Ceremony. In this lecture, Shinshu investigates the meaning of “Beings are numberless, I vow to save them.” What is the meaning of “beings,” “numberless,” and “save?” Just who is doing the saving and who is saved? She explains the meaning of the Japanese characters that are being translated in this verse.

Beings are numberless, I vow to carry them across.

Delusions are inexhaustible, I vow to end them.

Dharmagates are boundless, I vow to enter them.

Buddha’s Way is unsurpassable, I vow to become it.

This third talk (part 1 of 2) continues the exploration of the meaning of the Full Moon Ceremony’s recitation of the Four Bodhisattva Vows. In this lecture Shinshu talks about the meaning of vow and the I that makes such a vow.
